Paseo and Vista Estero Affordable Housing buildings at Brooklyn Basin, Oakland by MidPen Housing. Over a 2 year span we created and installed over 70+ pieces of permanent artwork: Kinetic wind installations (above), concrete designs, metal sculpture, murals and handpaintings from over 100 youth and master local artists. In conjunction with Oakland Unified School District, HKIT Architects, Nibbi Construction.
These pieces were made by ourselves and Oakland Unified School District youth artists during the onset and throughout the Covid pandemic. These artworks were made in student homes, where their families were able to see them engage in making art over a long period of time. We cannot overstate how special this was for us, the students teachers and families.
We started the project during Covid 19, and managed the entire project virtually, distributing supplies to students homes and working via Zoom. At the time it was one of the few arts programs that were running during the pandemic, and connected dozens of students across 6 schools to each other to collaborate and make happen.
